Misunderstanding of Design is primarily the fault of designers

A night out in a bar can throw up all kinds of surprising conversations. This last weekend I became embroiled (that is definitely the word) in conversation with woman I’d never met before on the subject of what design is. More specifically it is what designers do that was the main crux of the matter. My conversational partner was adamant – designers are focussed primarily on the aesthetic of things, they make them pretty, desirable. I find this view of design frustrating and mired in misinterpretation. But if it is still the case that the vast majority of people who do not work in design do not fully understand the remit of its range of professions then the blame for that lies largely with those professionals… and that certainly includes me as well.
